Overview
This comprehensive three-day course covers all the essential aspects of occupational first aid. It gives learners the knowledge and practical skills to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness, and maintain the care and comfort of a casualty until medical help arrives.
The course meets the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Part 7, Chapter 2, First Aid. It includes Cardiac First Responder training in automated external defibrillators (AEDs). All ASTS trainers are registered Occupational First Aid Instructors.
Who should attend
Anyone who wants to be trained and certified as an Occupational First Aider. Under the 2007 Regulations, employers must have a sufficient number of trained occupational first aiders in the workplace, based on a risk assessment.
Course objectives
- Understand the responsibilities of the occupational first aider
- Provide treatment to preserve life or minimise the consequences of injury until medical assistance arrives
- Treat workplace injuries that do not need a medical practitioner or nurse
- Coordinate first aid arrangements in the workplace
- Know the health and safety legislation covering first aid provision

- Unit 1: First aid in the workplace
- Unit 2: Patient assessment
- Unit 3: Respiratory emergencies
- Unit 4: Cardiac first response (CPR and defibrillator)
- Unit 5: Wounds and bleeding
- Unit 6: Altered levels of consciousness
- Unit 7: Musculoskeletal injuries
- Unit 8: Burns, scalds, chemicals and electric shock
Assessment and certification
Participants complete a theoretical exam and skills assessments: basic life-saving skills (40%), short-answer examination (30%) and two skills demonstrations (30%). Assessments are internally and externally authenticated before certification is issued, and the examination is conducted by an independent instructor.
Successful candidates receive a QQI Level 5 certificate, valid for two years. Grading: Pass 50 to 64%, Merit 65 to 79%, Distinction 80 to 100%.
